Familial FTD

Yes, Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) can be inherited. In fact, it is highly heritable disease. Overall, around 40% if all the FTD cases are due to inherited mutations on one of these three genes: Chromosome 9 open reading frame 72 (C9orf72), Microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT) or Progranulin (GRN). The genetic inheritance is equal for both sexes regardless of parental gender. Inherited form of FTD is called familial FTD. However, FTD can occur sporadically as well, without a known genetic cause.
